High Water

After all the snow we got over Christmas and a lot of rain, our river got pretty high around New Years. We had one restless night of sleep, when the water level went past what it was in 06 when the Sandy flooded and ripped a house at the end of our street in half. The main difference for why it didn't flood this time was that it was mainly snowmelt and didn't have much debris like the 06 flood. In 06 it was like cement coming down the mountain taking trees and earth along its path. We live on a nice hill, so our risk is pretty low for flooding, but we always worry about our neighbors.

The river is right up to the bank
You can see some of the erosion that happened from the 06 flood

Meadow and I checking out the scene. The big tree on top of the big rock was recently deposited from this high water. The water had actually gone down a bit from the night before. This picture also shows how there is two channels above our house. In the 06 flood the left channel was clogged with debris and trees. Some of our nice neighbors cut up a bunch of those trees so that when we had high water again, it would flush them down river. This really helped our neighborhood during these past heavy rains. I am sure if Todd has some time to post, he would love to tell you more about the specifics of the high water and maybe even post some videos.
